Colorado is a diverse state, both geographically and demographically. This means the needs of communities vary greatly county-by-county and Komen Colorado works hard to respond to these needs with limited resources.
In rural communities, the challenge to getting breast cancer care stems from a lack of medical facilities in a sparsely populated area. Often times, women living in rural communities, whether on the plains or in the mountains, have to drive more than 100 miles to go to one appointment.
In Front Range communities, the challenge to getting breast cancer care stems from high costs. There are many medical facilities in populated communities, but these medical facilities often have restrictions such as which insurance is accepted and cost-sharing procedures that make getting care out-of-reach for many.
The Mission Action Plan (MAP) is a document developed from the needs assessment that outlines a path for Komen Colorado to support those in the service area who need the most assistance to meet Healthy People 2020 goals.
