Komen’s research focus has evolved over the years. In the beginning, the focus was on understanding the basic biology of breast cancer. As we learn more about the factors that make cancer cells grow and spread, Komen has been able to invest more in the translation of this knowledge into treatment, early detection, and prevention.

The current research focus is to understand and develop new methods to treat breast cancers that do not currently respond well to standard of care therapies, including:

  • ER+ breast cancer and triple negative breast cancer that has acquired resistance to therapies
  • Metastatic breast cancer of all sub-types

Over the past 35 years, Komen has provided a full spectrum of grants that are available or have been available to researchers at every stage of their career.
